school district. The organization meeting was last Tuesday night with about 150 present, and more than 120 signed up for the training, which will mean a tw0- hour session every Tuesday evening for about 14 weeks; ten for First Aid and 4 for air raid, fires, etc. I shall take the courses but mother will confine her activity to Red Cross organization for the block. On the first of October I abandoned the use of the family car for transportation to the office, and again have embraced the public transportation system. We are saving the tires and conserving driving to be within the four gal limit an gas, which seems to be coming. I believe that our trips to church and a bit of other driving about town, together with an occasional trip back to Adel or to Turin, will corns within the limits of restrictions so far announced. You will remember that I spoke of Craig Willy being home a couple or three weeks ago. He had been assigned to a new airfield near Colorado Springs for further training on reconnaissance work. While driving from Omaha to that base with his buddy, also from Omaha, he was stricken with appendicitis and was operated on immediately upon arrival. His progress was good for a few days when a blood clot formed and he was dangerously ill for about a week. Now he is recovering in nice shape and I understand that he will spend about three weeks at home as soon as he is able to travel. Yesterday I had a visit with Felix Evans, one of the bank's appraisers who lives near Ottumwa and who was in Omaha to exchange cars. He mentioned that the new Navy air field near Ottumwa is well under way and part of it will be ready for use soon. The set-up. will be sixteen outlying landing fields, and Tommy Oldham told me that he almost lost 160 acres of his farm near Eddyville for one of those landing fields. The choice was made of land just across the road from Tom's place. I fancy that the Ottumwa base will serve the same purpose as the one at Gardner, Kansas, tho I have no specific information on that. This will be about all for this time, tho I shall write each of you a note in regard to some questions which have been raised in your various epistles. I also am enclosing some exchange letters that I believe you have not seen, and which should be returned. Much love Pop
