3 During intermission all too brief, we strolled in the lobby And all was verified tip to toe and back again So fresh, so cute, lovely as a Southern rose Figure perfect, smile bewitching, tiny freckles here & there I couldn't help it, something must be done, mused I In the moment she turned to speak to passing friend I phrased to Bob in urgent whisper my eager plan She should sit between us, one of either side "Twas only fair, long companions, fraternal brothers The decent thing to do, surely you must agree?" All was going fine, very well, or so I thought Down the aisle we walked, first I, then she, lastly Bob What a buddy, what a pal, pure gold through & through It couldn't miss, there it was, one, two, and three "Pardon me, could we get by?" I smiled as I sat down But Burns was right, "the best laid schemes, gang aft agley" For Bob, traitor that he was, faithless, fickle soul Was shoving in ahead with courteous remark of course But there he was just the same, deceiving, deceitful devil "All's fair in love & war," whispers he & settles down
