the Chicago stockyards in the campaign of 1940 was a bad error. However, on the whole he has been a wonderful force for American unity and victory in this war. I have great admiration for his political courage - and foresight. The Republican party has a fine chance of redeeming itself and making him president in 1944 if they aren't too pigheaded to make the most of their opportunity. Have been reading quite a bit in the Pocket Editions of Verse and Short stories that I bought just before coming out to Cecil. Also read Keys of the Kingdom by A. J. Cronin in my spare time - a wonderfully well written book. Am now 250 pages into Gertrude Atherton's "The Conqueror," a dramatic biography of Alexander Hamilton.
