Sunday 11 AM Nov. 22, 1942 Dear Folks, Getting into town and back is quite a chore; I frequently question whether it is worth the effort. However, not having been off the base for two weeks Bob and I decided to seek some diversion last night - and get a real good meal. The mess here on the station has been pretty poor for the most part. There is some guy in the kitchen who must have a Popeye complex. We get coarse spinach and foul turnip greens practically every meal. Why, they grow better grass in Iowa than that stuff. We got into town about three oclock in the afternoon, and the first thing we did was to get two ice cream sundaes apiece. After buying a Life and a Time and doing some other minor scale shopping we went to a movie. For supper I ordered a steak, french fries, green peas, head lettuce with thick, creamy 1000 island dressing, hot graham muffins, apple pie with cheese, and a cold glass of milk. Man, was it good; I had been saving up all day. We saw another movie afterwards, strolled around a bit, and then caught the 10:30 bus out to the station. It is about then that I swear it isn't worth it. You have to stand in line to get a ticket, struggle to get on the bus at all, then very likely stand up most of the way. How wonderful that bed feels when I finally roll in! Well, I must grouse a little now and then, but don't fret, things are really quite enjoyable.
