July 13th. 1864 Wednesday Yesterday our company was detailed to act as guard at the state line bridge - In the afternoon I with three of the men went out about a mile and obtained a fine lot of black berries - We also received some of our back mail I received a letter from Waite and one from [Susie?] both more than a month old - Yet it did me good to read them - The weather is quite hot about as hot as I ever saw in Iowa. I had a jolly time on
