Jan 19, 1942 Monday 10 AM. Dear People: Today I assume the duties of Wing Commander for the right wing of the student barracks. It is a position of no particular import or responsibility, but, nonetheless, it is the highest rank attainable for a student on this base. The left Wing Commander and I now share a room of our own. It is within the walls of my new quarters that I am seated as I write this. Outside the sun is shining brightly on a scene of routine activity each morning and afternoon. Planes are being gassed, warmed up and taken off continuously. Just a few minutes ago I came down from another hour of solo. Things went well, quite well in fact. Each ride gives me more confidence which in turn makes it more enjoyable. On Friday last Bergen took me up for an hour and a half check which is the usual procedure after a student has had three hours of solo. The purpose, of course, is to find out if he has picked up any bad habits, and,
