2 U.S. Naval Air Station PENSACOLA, FLORIDA rather difficult for me since I really am starting from scratch. Hardly knew the difference between a destroyer and a cruiser when I entered the navy, and never made any attempt to distinguish between types of airplanes. As a matter of fact, telling a Ford from a Chevrolet just about was the limit of my ability among cars. Until it was explained to me the other day, the use of letters and numbers in designating planes was most confusing. That is, when some one said there goes an OS2U or an SNJ-1 I felt as if they were speaking a foreign language. Now I find that the first letter or two indicates the class or purpose of the plane, the following number
