indicates a major change in that particular type, and the last letter is the mfg. designation. If there is still a number after that it indicates a minor change or alteration in that type. Also I learned that N stood for trainer. For example, N3N - indicates a navy primary trainer, 3 changes since 1st mfg. and turned out by the Navy yard at Philadelphia. OS2U indicates an observation scout type place, 2 changes, and U stands for Vought - Sikorsky as mfg. All very interesting don't you think, and simple once you get on to it. Our instructor in recognition class told some highly interesting things while trying to make the point of how important this work was. He mentioned how the Italians bombed their own ships a good many times, (the Eng. did also - you'll remember the clipping you sent me at K.C.) and even escorted a British convoy though the Mediterranean thinking it was their own.
