Nile - 3 We had a very satisfying visit with Ben over last week end. He came in about 7 PM on Thursday, driving with a lad from Ames who wished to take care of a social matter in Omaha. His return was by similar means by virtue of the same impulse, tho a different lad. All quite handy, I should say. Eleanor was our guest Saturday night and on Sunday until they departed about five o'clock in the aft. Tho not bragging, Ben seems satisfied with the last quarters results and believes that this quarter will really pay off for the four years of steady grind. His schedule is light and with a minimum of lab, thus leaving the maximum for adventures in social studies, if you have any idea what is involved there. Casual observation would lead me to aver that present channels of investigation offer considerable promise and personally I should concur in his judgment. An avenue of research that I recommend to you at such time as, you may find yourself less absorbed in other important fields. An enterprise that requires and merits more than casual attention; highly competetive and once seriously engaged in, one from which there is no withdrawing without loss of face, and very little chance to coast. What I mean is, it is a business at which both parties have to work to make it go. .Highly profitable and worthy of the best man in the world, but no place for a loafer. We have been interested In your comments on the weather down there. Probably characteristic of seaboards. Up here it has been very changeable. Windy, snowy, rainy, cold, sunny and sometimes even warm. The past week has seen all phases, and out in the northcentral part of the state was a real blizzard with blocked highways, and everything. Hope that you have some good weather for flying, now that you are starting with the ships again. By the way, I would like to know more about Wyman; how long he has been there, why he was transferred from Corpus Christ and how long before he completes his training. Mrs. Hayward was at Ames last week, and Ben just missed seeing her. Carl was with her and was at the house. I understand that Ben saw him. Carl will be entering Ames a year from next fall. A letter from Ruth last week tells us that Bett and Russ were married in Newark on Tuesday the 24th. Russ had about ten days leave and his superior officer told all the men who intended to get married during the next few months to get the job done on this leave. After phoning the home folks Bett went in to New York to meet Russ. Russ left for duty on last Friday and Bett came back to Chicago. Inasmuch as they had planned their wedding for June anyway, it seemed quite alright. The last step would appear of small consequence in their case. Your bank statement came in from Iowa City, and as there was only the check for your income tax, I am not sending it to you. The balance is $233,72 as of Feb.28. If you want these statements sent down please tell me. The clipping of Lippmann's that you sent, is one that I had read and thoroughly approved of. He has touched on a weakness of this administration; intellectual dishonesty, to put it bluntly. That point, however, is one that all of us can well meditate on.That is why I liked old man Weir's frank statement. Far more honest, I feel sure, than those such as, "the right man in the right place". Nuts! Did you ever get the sox wesent to New Orleans? Assume that you did. The mail service between here and Pensacola is cnsiderably better than that to New Orleans, for some unknown reason. This is about all for tonight, and I repeat that my end of the correspondence will be better supported, I feel sure. Love Pop
