of every man. Would suggest you look it over, if you have time. There were a good many fine passages in it, but I shall pass on only one or two. I liked the quotation by Socrates from the apology which Steinbeck put into the mouth of the mayor - "a man who is good for anything ought not to calculate the chance of living or dying; he ought only to consider whether he is acting the part of a good man or bad." And this - "the people don't like to be conquered, sir, so they will not be. Free men cannot start a war, but once it is started they can fight on in defeat. Herd men, followers of a leader cannot do that, & so it is always the herd men who win battles, & the free men who win wars." And finally this last, which so perfectly describes Hitlers situation in the conquered countries - "The flies have conquered the flypaper."
