not a disciplinary summons. In short, it said that Mr & Mrs. O'Brien of Iowa City had informed them that Pettit & I were down here, they would so much like to meet us, and would we please drop in and see them on Friday at 5:30, signed Bess Read, the captains wife. Well, we were flattered naturally, the captain is a 4 striper and we are but lowly cadets. However, it would be no easy matter to get there. Classes don't let out until ten minutes of five and my white uniform, the only suitable dress, was not yet ready. Nonetheless, the invitation of a captain's wife is virtually command so we planned to go. I managed to borrow a uniform that fit fairly well and away we went. It turned out to be a cocktail party in the back yard with two and three stripers thicker than the sands of the seas. Mrs. Read introduced us around to a few people, and would say that we were from Iowa, had they ever been there? No? -
