3 U.S. Naval Air Station PENSACOLA, FLORIDA experiences in this war. It was excellent propaganda and stirred the blood of us all, I know. He was most unassuming and barely referred to his own much publicized exploits. Here is a statement he made in a humorous sort of way which is typically American: "there I was up there, all alone with about 9 bombers; there wasn't much else I could do but try to shoot them down." What a contrast to what an Axis ace would probably have said! Thank you all for the telegram on Mother's Day. It was nice of you to think of me.
