Houston, Texas 8 April 1946 (reply to inquiry of 12-31-'45) Dear Mr. Kinnick, I'm sorry I haven't written you sooner. Your letter has followed me around the country, & when I received it, was about to be transferred again. I am now at home on leave before reposting to San Diego for reassignment. I can readily understand your anxiety for more information for my brother was killed on 19 January 1945, & we still desire all extra information we can get! I will try to give you as many facts as I can for I am the only one left out of our original Four man team. However, time has dimmed my memory but very little. We took off that day on what was to have been a practice attack on the ship. As we were climbing for altitude, Nile radioed that his oil pressure was dropping. The ship also heard the message & ordered him back for an emergency landing but his oil pressure dropped to zero & his engine froze. Cotton, Reiter & I followed Nile
