Saving...
- 9 - cynicism and without harm to anyone. I will give just one example of his sense of humor which again appears in his diary while he was in aviation training. December 10, 1941. "I cannot refrain from making this little observation. We have 6 toilets arranged so that 3 face each other for about 110 men. I do not have many aristocratic leanings, but, for some reason or another, I do like privacy when assuming the undignified position necessary for a bowel movement." Just to show he was not perfect, I might mention the only deficiency in Nile's abilities that I could recognize which became obvious when he tried to sing. He could not carry a tune in a bushel basket. I have tried to give you a few glimpses of the man Nile Kinnick. It may help you understand why he was more than a great athlete and an outstanding scholar. Persons like Nile Kinnick are few and far between. He possessed all of the qualities that we should strive to emulate. If you would do our best to develop those attributes, your home towns, the school of your choice, the State of Iowa, the nation and the world would all be better places in which to live.
