NILS CLARKE KINNICK, JR. Nile Clarke Kinnick, Jr., a Navy pilot who died in the Caribbean during World War II, may well be considered a symbol of those qualities which are implicit in the word "Americanism". Kinnick combined athletic prowess, good sportsmanship, and scholarship to become not only a Phi Beta Kappa at the University of Iowa, but also the winner of every award for outstanding play in football that the nation offers. Capturing the Heisman, Maxwell, and Camp trophies, he was voted Iowa's most valuable player and was subsequently elected to the Football Hall of Fame. Kinnick's fine scholarship placed him in the top one per cent of his class after his first year in law school. It was then that he left school to become a Navy fighter pilot, dying on a mission over the Caribbean when he was forced to land his fighter in the water before an aircraft carrier crew could clear him room to land.
