Brazos Santiago Texas Wednesday May 31st.. 1865. Dear Ellen. The mail came again yesterday and it contained 3 letters for me, - 2 from you and 1 from Adda - all of which were very welcom. They found me in the non enjoyment of not quite as good health as usual, though not very sick. I had a little tramp over on the main land again last Friday to escort some beef in from Mex,, which near "played me out". I am now in command of a detachment of 71 men of the regiment that was left here last Sunday after noon. The rest of the regiment, with all the other troops on the island able to march, left Sunday after noon & I expect they are in Brownsville by this time, though I have not heard from them. - Gen Brown is in command of the expedition. I had every thing packed up & was ready to march, when just before they left I received a special order, which kept me in camp in command of those men left behind
